The MLM Scam
I was excited to have dinner and catch up with friends that we hadn’t seen in a long time. I was telling them how I left Corporate America after ten plus years and have started my own business with an MLM company, otherwise known as direct sales or network marketing. The first thing out of his mouth was, “you are doing one of those pyramid scam things?” I have a Master of Accounting degree, so I like to consider myself a fairly educated person. “Yes I am”, was my response. People are entitled to their opinions; however, I must admit it felt like being thrown in front of a bus. I felt sad that anyone would think so low of me to join a scam.
Is this a Pyramid?
Is it like a pyramid? Sure. What company isn’t? I worked for Corporate America and it was more of a pyramid scam than this. I was working for a manager, who was working for a director, who was working for a CEO. With MLM, we have layers, too. My sponsor coaches me and in return, I coach my own team. I get paid for what I work and my hard work decides my own promotions. Someone else does not get to decide my worth. I get paid commissions for customers who buy the product and then I get overrides for the time I spend training my team to build their own business.
Who is the Typical Consultant?
We come from all walks of life. Doctors, nurses, lawyers, teachers, athletes, corporate employees, journalists, realtors, college students and more! The majority of consultants tend to be female, but don’t exclude the men that have figured this secret out! Consultants are single, married, mothers, young, starting over, retired and intellegent human beings that are looking for more in life. You may already be happy and love your job and what you do or may be to the point asking yourself “is this as good as it gets?” We are the people who ask ourselves what legacy am I leaving? What do I want people to say about me when I am 80? We look to live our life with passion and on purpose.
Hobby or Business?
The majority of people who sign up with a company typically treat their business as a hobby either to earn a little extra spending cash or to get the products for themselves at a discount and that is perfectly fine! In order for MLM to work as a business and to make money, you have to treat it as a business and work it consistently every day. You also have to learn from the experts that have already made it to the top and are successful and copy what they do.
Are You Ready to be Your Own Boss?
If you are serious about changing your life and want to have your own business, you have to understand that this is not a get rich quick scheme. It can make a drastic difference in your life in a short time though. You have to give yourself time to learn and build a team and customer base. You have to devote a few minutes every day and work the business consistently. Your sponsor is also very important. Make sure they are not just doing this as a hobby, they have learned the business in order to train you, and they will stick with you. Your team is very important as well. These people will become some of your best friends.
